Immigrant illegally in the US attacked ICE officers as he was arrested in Kansas: feds

Federal prosecutors allege that an immigrant who illegally entered the United States attacked Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers as he was arrested in south-central Kansas.

Gerson Ayala-Alfaro, 27, was indicted by a grand jury on Wednesday on charges of re-entry of a removed alien and two counts of assault of a federal employee involving bodily injury. The case was filed in U.S. District Court in Wichita.

The indictment alleges that Ayala-Alfaro is a citizen of Honduras and was previously deported from the Louisiana in October 2012. He re-entered the country sometime after that and was found on Jan. 17, when he allegedly attacked two ICE deportation officers. The officers were hurt, but the nature and extent of their injuries was not detailed in court documents. The incident happened in Sumner County.

U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister said in a news release that if convicted, Ayala-Alfaro would face up to two years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000 on the re-entry charge and up to 20 years in prison and fines of up to $250,000 on each of the assault counts.
