Bomb squad removes ‘unexploded device’ from downtown Cherryvale, police say

A bomb squad removed what Cherryvale police described as an “unexploded device” that was found downtown on Tuesday.

The Cherryvale Police Department received a report at around 10:15 a.m. “that there was an unexploded device in the downtown area,” Police Chief Jimmy Holt said in a news release. Residents and businesses in the area were asked to evacuate for their safety.

City officials in a Facebook post asked people to avoid the area of Main and Neosho streets. Maps show the city hall, a fire station, a post office, a bank and businesses within a block of that intersection.

A Kansas Highway Patrol bomb squad removed the device at around 2:10 p.m., police said.

Cherryvale is a town of about 2,200 people in Montgomery County about 120 miles southeast of Wichita.
