Garden City police arrest attempted murder suspect after woman was strangled, beaten

A western Kansas man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after he allegedly beat and strangled his girlfriend during a domestic violence case, police said.

The Garden City Police Department said in a news release that officers were called at around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday to a battery-in-progress in the 1200 block of East Fulton.

Upon arrival, police separated Tommy Jene Aguilar, 39, from a woman. Investigators determined Aguilar and the woman had gotten into a fight elsewhere in the town before the woman ran away. Aguilar chased her, and officers intervened and took him into custody.

The woman had allegedly been strangled and beaten by Aguilar, police said. She was treated at St. Catherine Hospital. A police spokesperson said the couple were in a dating relationship.

Aguilar was arrested and booked into the Finney County Jail. Police are requesting criminal charges of attempted second-degree murder, aggravated domestic battery, violation of a protective order and interference with a law enforcement officer.

Kansas Department of Corrections records show Aguilar has prior convictions in Finney County in 2018 of criminal threat and drug possession, as well as a drug possession conviction in 2016 in Morton County.
