Winfield police ask people be ‘extra vigilant’ against credit card skimming

Credit card skimming in Winfield has led police to ask residents to be “extra vigilant anytime they use their debit/credit card at an outdoor gas pump and or outdoor ATM.”

The Winfield Police Department said Thursday that it has had numerous complaints from residents who reported their cards being used outside of the Winfield area. The department said it thinks thieves used card skimmers and then cloned the victim’s cards after they were used at Winfield businesses.

“Everyone is asked to contact the police department if they do see any suspicious devices on these readers, or any signs that a credit card reader has been tampered with,” Winfield police said in a press release.

The police department can be contacted at 620-221-5555 or callers can remain anonymous by calling Cowley County Crime Stoppers at 620-221-7777. Tips can also be cowleycounty.org/crime-stoppers
