Man, 32, who forced way into home after shooting through door killed by resident

Wichita police say a 32-year-old man is dead after a resident of the south-side home he forced his way into overnight fired back.

Capt. Brent Allred said investigators think the shooting and home invasion are tied to drugs.

He said the 32-year-old intruder went to the house in the 1800 block of South Topeka around midnight Tuesday with a handgun and knocked on the door. A 35-year-old man who lives at the house answered the knock but refused to let the 32-year-old in, Allred said.

The 32-year-old responded by firing the gun once at the door, hitting the 35-year-old resident.

“The 32-year-old male then forced open the front door and went inside,” Allred said.

Allred said during the commotion, the 35-year-old resident of the home got a gun and fired several rounds at the intruder.

When officers went to the house to investigate the shooting call, they found the intruder inside with critical injuries. The resident had serious injuries. Both men were hospitalized.

The intruder later died at the hospital, Allred said. The man’s name was not immediately released Wednesday morning.

“There have been no arrests in this case. It remains under investigation. We do not believe this is a random incident,” Allred said Wednesday morning.

The killing is the 41st homicide of the year in Wichita.
