Wichita man charged with second-degree murder in wife’s death
A 31-year-old Wichita man was charged Tuesday with second-degree murder in the death of his wife in April.
Derek Campbell had told police he accidentally shot his wife while removing his gun from its holster.
Campbell was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter after the incident.
His charge has now been upgraded to second-degree murder. He is being held on a $200,000 bond.
Judge Joe Kisner asked Campbell if he understand the charges being levied against him.
“Not fully, no,” Campbell replied.
Kisner explained the charges further.
Local attorney Val Wachtel was appointed to represent Campbell in the case. He is scheduled in court again at 9 a.m. June 23.
According to a financial affidavit Campbell filed, he has been unemployed for more than six months, receiving a disability payment of $1,064 per month.
