Man sexually assaulted 3 teens at downtown Wichita YMCA, police say

A man has been arrested on suspicion of rape after three teenage girls reported being sexually assaulted at the downtown Wichita YMCA, police say.

At 8:20 p.m. Wednesday, Wichita police responded to a sexual assault call at the YMCA, 402 N. Market.

Police spoke to two 16-year-old girls and a 17-year-old girl who reported being sexually assaulted in the indoor pool area, Wichita police officer Charley Davidson said.

They did not know the suspect, Davidson said.

Keith Magoon, 31, was arrested and booked into Sedgwick County Jail around 2:45 a.m. Thursday on suspicion of rape, aggravated sexual battery and two counts of sexual battery, according to jail records.

A YMCA official did not respond to The Eagle’s questions through email.

“As with any active police investigation we are not able to discuss the case, its specifics, or provide additional information at this time,” the YMCA said in a statement. It would not provide news media with additional comment or access to their facilities, according to the statement.

The sexual assault case apparently involved a guest at the YMCA through “a partner organization.” It’s unclear what that organization is and whether that guest was Magoon.

“We are heartbroken and are working closely with the police to determine what happened. The safety of our members and guests is our priority and over the last year the YMCA instituted numerous additional safety procedures. This case appears to involve a guest through a partner organization and we will continue examining those programs as well as our overall programs to ensure the safety of all our members and guests,” the statement said.

A former YMCA worker was sentenced to 27 1/2 years in prison last month after he pleaded no contest to two counts of rape in connection with the molestation of two young girls in the downtown Y’s Kid Zone daycare.

Shortly after the employee, Caleb Gaston, was arrested, the Greater Wichita YMCA’s president and CEO, Ronn McMahon, promised to evaluate the company’s “extensive safety measures and seek out opportunities to further advance child safety.”

McMahon announced the company would change company policies and practices to prevent sexual abuse at its Wichita locations. He said 100 security cameras would be added and efforts would be made to increase visibility.
