Weekend shooting investigation affected by ‘lack of cooperation,’ Wichita police say
A 39-year-old man was shot multiple times on Saturday evening, but a “lack of cooperation” is affecting the investigation, according to the Wichita Police Department.
The male victim is a “documented gang member,” Officer Paul Cruz said during Monday’s public safety briefing, but investigators have not confirmed if this was a gang-related shooting.
Officers responded to the shooting call at about 6:20 p.m. Saturday near Eighth Street and Pershing in east Wichita, Cruz said. When officers arrived, they found an unoccupied black Chevrolet Camaro that had been shot multiple times. They also found several spent shell casings in the street, Cruz said.
In the 800 block of North Pershing, officers found a home struck by gunfire. A 42-year-old man, a 3-year-old girl and a 4-year-old girl were inside the home when it was damaged, but they were not injured.
The 39-year-old man has “nothing to do” with the home and was inside the car when he was shot, Cruz said.
Minutes after finding the car and home struck by gunfire, police learned the 39-year-old man showed up at Wesley Hospital, Cruz said. He had been shot multiple times and was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
This was not a random incident, Cruz said.
Because of the “lack of cooperation,” police are asking anyone with additional information to contact Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111 or Wichita detectives at 316-268-4407.
