Two people found shot on porch at house across the street from police station, cops say

Officers and detectives are investigating a shooting near a south Wichita police station that sent two people to a hospital.

A preliminary investigation “indicates this was an accidental shooting after the gun malfunctioned,” Wichita police Officer Paul Cruz said in an email Saturday.

Emergency crews were called at around 7:12 p.m. Friday to a reported shooting in the area of Pawnee and Market, a Sedgwick County dispatch supervisor said. Two people were taken to a hospital with injuries — one in critical and the other in serious condition.

The location of the shooting, listed as the 2300 block of South Market, is less than a block from the Wichita police Patrol South station.

“An officer was leaving the station when he noticed people across the street sitting on a porch in distress,” police Sgt. Bob Gulliver said. “The officer went to this location and discovered that he had at least two gunshot wounds and there was another individual beside him also with gunshot wounds.”

The men, ages 29 and 31, were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. They are the only people involved in the incident, police said. One man lived at the house catty-corner to the police station. The other man was the resident’s cousin.

Gulliver said the shooting happened at the house, and police found a handgun at the scene. The investigation is ongoing into the circumstances of the shooting.

“The two people in the residence know what happened, so we need to get their stories,” Gulliver said.
