Wichita detective charged with battery after on-duty incident with coworker, police say

A Wichita police detective was charged with misdemeanor battery on Wednesday, court records show.

Detective Rick Craig was charged Wednesday in Sedgwick County District Court. The charge stems from “a previous incident between himself and a coworker while on duty,” Wichita police spokesman Charley Davidson said in a news release Thursday afternoon.

Craig was placed on unpaid leave until the Wichita Police Department decides whether he violated department policies, Davidson said. He has been with the department since 1987.

The incident was investigated by the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office. The two agencies have an agreement to investigate the other department to avoid conflicts of interest, Davidson said.

Prosecutors say between April 1, 2018, and May 30, 2018, Craig unlawfully and knowingly contacted another person in “a rude, insulting or angry manner,” court documents say.

Sedgwick County District Judge David Dahl issued a protective order that forbids Craig from contacting the coworker, according to a filing in his case.

Davidson said Wichita police wouldn’t provide further comment Thursday afternoon.
