Kansas man wounded in shootout with Pratt police officers dies, KBI investigating

Update: (Wednesday, 1:30 p.m.) — Rene Prieto, 38, of Pratt, died in a Wichita hospital on Wednesday after being shot by police, according to a statement by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

An autopsy will be performed, and the investigation is ongoing.

A man who was shot by Pratt police is in critical condition at a Wichita hospital after he first fired at officers, investigators say.

Pratt police were called to a home in the 500 block of North Main at around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday for a report of a man who was in the street and waving a gun, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said in a news release. Responding officer found a man armed with a weapon outside of the home.

The man was identified as Rene Prieto, 38, of Pratt.

“As officers approached Prieto, attempting to make contact with him, he fired at one of the officers,” KBI spokeswoman Melissa Underwood said in the release. “Three officers returned fire. Prieto was injured by gunfire. Officers secured Prieto and the scene, and called EMS.”

Prieto was taken to a Wichita hospital, where he was in critical condition as of Tuesday night, the release said. No law enforcement officers were injured in the shootout.

The KBI is investigating the officer-involved shooting and will present its findings to the Pratt County Attorney, the release said.

Pratt is about 80 miles west of Wichita.
