Several law enforcement agencies in the Sedgwick County area are collecting expired and unwanted medications on Saturday as part of the National Take Back initiative, officials said.

People can drop off any expired or unwanted prescription or over-the-counter medications at one of eight locations in the Wichita area, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. Drop-off times are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The free initiative is sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the sheriff’s office said. Aerosols, liquids, syringes and other injectables will not be accepted.

“Prescription drug abuse in the United States is increasing at an alarming rate, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses,” the release said. “Many citizens are not aware of how to properly dispose of their unused medications. Flushing medications down the toilet or throwing them away creates a potential safety and health hazard.“

  • Sedgwick County Zoo, 5555 W. Zoo Blvd

  • Household Hazardous Waste Center, 801 W. Stillwell

  • Oaklawn Activity Center, 4904 S. Clifton
