Man points gun at officers after his ex-wife called for help, Wichita police say

At about 11:30 p.m. on Monday, a 42-year-old woman called police and reported that her ex-husband was causing a disturbance, Officer Charley Davidson said during Monday’s news briefing.

When Wichita police officers responded to the call at the home in the 9700 block of West 10th Street, they found her ex-husband in a vehicle in the area, Davidson said.

The man, 42-year-old Paul Westphal, then started driving away, and police chased him.

After a “short pursuit,” Westphal pulled into a driveway in the 1300 block of North Country Acres and fled on foot.

Officers ran after him, Davidson said, but when just a few feet away, they saw that Westphal had a gun in his hand.

Police took “quick action” and were able to disarm and restrain him and take him into custody.

Westphal was booked into jail on suspicion of violation of a district court order, five counts of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, battery of a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest and traffic violations.
