A school resource officer at a Wichita high school was taken to a hospital after he was bitten and cut by a student, officials said.

Police responded to an officer in trouble call at 11:50 a.m. Wednesday at Heights High School, Officer Paul Cruz said. A 17-year-old girl who was either an expelled or suspended student had injured a school resource officer, he said.

The officer was bitten several times on his arm and also received cuts to his face, Cruz said. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries and later released.

More law enforcement officers responded to the scene, and the girl was arrested on suspicion of aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest, Cruz said. The girl had also been reported as a runaway from the Wichita Children’s Home, police said.

No other injuries were reported, Cruz said.

“A student who was told not to come onto campus yesterday came to the school,” Wichita Public Schools spokeswoman Susan Arensman said. “When the SRO asked the student to leave, the student became physically aggressive and combative as he attempted to escort the student off campus and additional officers were called to assist with the student.

“At no time were any other students or staff in danger and the incident was resolved after another officer arrived to assist.”
