One person critically injured after accidental shooting, Wichita police say

One person is in critical condition after a southwest Wichita shooting, officials said.

One person was in critical condition after a reported shooting at around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 3700 block of West Angel Street, near 47th South and West streets, a Sedgwick County dispatch supervisor said.

Officers responding to the scene found a man and woman in their 20s at a duplex, Wichita police Sgt. William Stevens said. The woman had a gunshot wound to her hip and torso area and was taken to a hospital.

Police are still investigating the circumstances of the shooting, but it was called into dispatch as an accident, Stevens said. He said he did not know what kind of gun was involved.

Emergency responders said on scanner traffic that the woman had been shot in her gluteus maximus by an AR-15 rifle and had a 4-inch exit wound on her back.

Police said they did not know the relationship between the man and woman. They are cooperating with investigators, Stevens said.
