A girl was at the pool in a northwest Kansas town when a man — a registered sex offender — asked her if she wanted a ride home, police said.

The man had pulled up in his vehicle next to the girl to offer her a ride, the WaKeeney Police Department said in a Facebook post.

"Luckily the girl was uneasy enough to decline the offer," police said, and she told a parent, who called the department.

The police chief then went to the pool and called the sheriff's office and the Kansas Highway Patrol. The man and his vehicle were found and he was escorted back to the WaKeeney Law Enforcement Center, police said.

There, they discovered he was a registered sex offender, and he was booked into the Trego County Jail on suspicion of probation violation, police said.

Eric Clayville, 42, was arrested Tuesday by WaKeeney police on suspicion of a probation violation, Trego County Sheriff's Office records show.

Clayville was convicted of attempted sexual exploitation of a child in Sherman County and sentenced to probation after a December 2015 incident, Kansas Department of Corrections records show.

WaKeeney is along I-70, which runs through the south side of town.
