Former jailer who got in trouble for abusing inmates pleads guilty in child-sex case
A former Sedgwick County jailer convicted of sexually abusing inmates has pleaded guilty to carrying on a sexual relationship with an underage boy while he was on parole.
A court affidavit released last month says David Kendall, 27, had sex with the 15-year-old three or more times at his Goddard home between July and December of 2017. He also asked the teen over social media application SnapChat to send nude photos.
Twice the boy rode his bicycle to Kendall's home for the encounters and at least once Kendall picked up the boy at the boy's home, the affidavit says. In July, the teen sent explicit pictures of himself to Kendall and Kendall saved them to his phone.
Kendall told a detective investigating the case he thought the boy was 17.
In Kansas, it's illegal for an adult to have sexual contact with a child younger than 16. It's illegal to have sexually explicit photos, videos, recordings or other images of anyone younger than 18.
At the time of the encounters with the boy, Kendall was still on parole for having sexual contact with inmates while he was a detention deputy at the Sedgwick County Jail. That case, which arose after several men came forward saying they'd been raped or sexually propositioned by Kendall in 2012 and 2013, prompted jail officials to increase efforts to combat sexual assault and harassment.
Kendall pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal sodomy and three counts of sexual exploitation of a child after waiving a preliminary hearing that had been set for June 21, according to Sedgwick County District Court records. He is scheduled for sentencing Aug. 10 before Sedgwick County District Court Judge Joe Kisner.
He faces about 4 1/2 to about 20 1/2 years in prison for each sodomy count and around 2 1/2 to 11 years in prison on each sexual exploitation count. He remains in the Sedgwick County Jail following his April 18 arrest.
