Update: Suspect in east Wichita homicide identified

Update May 3, 6:49 a.m.: Booking reports identify the man arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder in an east Wichita shooting as Emmanuel E. Reed, 31, of Wichita.

Reed was booked into jail just before 5 p.m. Wednesday after a 30-year-old man was fatally shot at around noon that day near Oliver and Harry, police said.

Original story:

A 30-year-old man was fatally shot on Elpyco at Funston — near Oliver and Harry — at around noon Wednesday, Wichita police said.

Officers arrived to the shooting just minutes after 911 was called, and minutes after that, had a male suspect in custody.

The suspected shooter was found at a nearby a Payless store, just a few blocks north of the shooting, Officer Charley Davidson said.

Police are still investigating what led up to the shooting. The relationship between the shooter and victim wasn't immediately known, Davidson said. The 30-year-old man had been shot multiple times, he said.

A man who lived around the block said he heard a commotion and what sounded like screaming before shots were fired.

More than a dozen patrol cars were on Elpyco, which will remain closed for most of the afternoon.
