Topeka man admits embezzling $51,000 from labor union

A Topeka man has pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $51,000 from the American Federation of Government Employees Local Union 906, which has 200 active members employed at the Veterans Administration Health Resource Center in Topeka and Waco, Texas.

Timothy Sanchez, 40, will be sentenced in federal court Nov. 25, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said in a news release.

Sanchez, in his plea, admitted making unauthorized debit card charges for expense reimbursements and writing unauthorized checks while he was president of the labor union. He then concealed the theft by filing false meeting minutes and false annual financial reports with the Department of Labor, Grissom said.

Sanchez faces up to 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine on the embezzlement count. He is no longer president of the labor union.
