Violent-crime victims get more than $280,000 in September
Victims of violent crime were awarded $282,453.91 by the Kansas Crime Victims Compensation Board in September.
The board last week approved payments in 100 news cases and in 108 cases that had been submitted previously, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said in a news release. The Crime Victims Compensation Program is funded by assessed court costs and fines, inmate wages, parole fees and restitution paid by convicts.
Last month, 248 victims received a total of $310,704.39. For more information on the program, call 785-296-2359 or go to www.ag.ks.gov.
Awards are capped at $25,000 and help pay for unexpected expenses stemming from violent crime, including medical treatment, mental health counseling, lost wages, dependent support and funeral costs. The board was established in 1978. It meets monthly.
