A Hutchinson man was killed in a one-car crash while he was being chased by law enforcement Friday night in rural Reno County, authorities said.

Angel Montiel, 25, was driving south on Wilson Road just after 9:45 p.m. on Friday when his Chrysler Town and Country went off the left side of the road and sideswiped a tree about half a mile south of Nickerson Boulevard, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Montiel was attempting to elude a Rice County Sheriff’s deputy in a chase that began in Rice County, a highway patrol dispatcher said Saturday.

The minivan spun out of control and Montiel was ejected. He died at the scene, which is about halfway between Hutchinson and Nickerson and just south of K-96.

Rice County authorities have not yet released additional information about the circumstances of the chase.
