Wichita double amputee on ‘Lockup’ jailed on suspicion of first-degree murder

A 37-year-old man was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail Wednesday night on suspicion of first-degree murder, according to jail booking reports.

Jeremy L. Honeycutt is also suspected of criminal possession of a firearm and possession of drug paraphernalia.

An incident report says Honeycutt was arrested in the killing of 51-year-old Michael Nelson of Wichita in the 1400 block of East Gidley early Wednesday.

Wichita police Lt. Todd Ojile said Nelson was on the street visiting someone. While standing alone outside, a vehicle pulled up. Words were exchanged and shots were fired from the vehicle, Ojile said.

A neighbor said he heard four pops. Nelson was hit once and died at the hospital.

Honeycutt was featured in an episode of the popular MSNBC show “Lockup.” The show was filmed in the Sedgwick County Jail from September to October 2015.

In the episode with Honeycutt that focused on Wichita gangs, he is accused of being involved in a bathroom fight that was partially caught on the main jail pod camera. Honeycutt remained adamant it was only a verbal argument.

He was released from prison earlier this year and was living at an address in Wichita. But he was booked back into the Sedgwick County Jail in June and prosecutors charged him with possession of a weapon.

Honeycutt has been wheelchair bound since he was 6 years old, the result of being hit by a train as he walked home from school, according to a 1992 lawsuit filed on behalf of him against the city of Wichita.
