Man arrested after brief standoff with officers
A man was arrested Sunday and taken to a local hospital for a physical and mental evaluation after a brief standoff in Oaklawn, a sheriff’s officer said.
Sedgwick County sheriff’s Sgt. Tracy Spreier said officers arrived at the home in the 4900 block of Hemlock Place at about noon Sunday after receiving a call about a man with a gun. One person in the home was able to leave the home safely just prior to the officers’ arrival, he said.
Spreier said officers evacuated the immediate area and tried to talk with the man, who allegedly had barricaded himself in the home with one or more weapons, “but the subject was non-responsive,” he said.
About 3:30 p.m., “we attempted to make entry, and he came running out and was taken into custody,” Spreier said.
The suspect was taken to Via Christi Hospital St. Joseph for a physical and psychological evaluation, he said.
