Police ID possible suspect in Thursday shooting

Wichita police have identified the person they say may have shot a 41-year-old man three times Thursday afternoon.

The shooting was reported shortly before 3:30 p.m. downtown in the 300 block of North Topeka.

Witnesses told police there was a fight between one man and several other people before the shooting. A bystander, identified as the 41-year-old man, stepped in to help the man who was being assaulted, Davidson said.

That’s when someone pulled a handgun and shot several times. The injured man was hit twice in the leg and once in the arm. He was taken to the hospital with serious but not-life-threatening injuries.

The area is often used as a gathering place for homeless people. Davidson said police are working on ways to reduce the number of disturbances that have been reported in that area, including addding fences.

“The issues in this area go beyond just a police response,” he said.

The investigation of what led up to the fight is still ongoing, he said.
