A Wichita man was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail early Sunday after police say he fired a gun in the direction of an officer.

Isaac Vaughn Huffman, 25, was booked just before 2 a.m. Sunday after being arrested on suspicion of criminal discharge of a firearm, aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, driving under the influence and obstruction or resistance in a felony case, according to jail records.

The possible assault of an officer and obstruction charges are felonies. The arrest happened near 53rd Street and Greenwich Road in Bel Aire, according to a jail booking report.

Lt. Robey Foxx of the Bel Aire Police Department said an officer in a parked squad car who was monitoring traffic in the area witnessed shots being fired from a moving Jeep Wrangler sometime after 9 p.m. on Saturday.

Once the officer began to follow the Jeep, Foxx said, two additional rounds were fired. Based on where they were found, police believe the two final rounds were fired backwards out the driver’s side of the Jeep, Foxx said.

“As a 20-year military veteran, the officer in this case knew exactly what was going on,” Foxx said. “It caused him to lay down across the center console of his patrol vehicle to avoid any rounds that might be coming in his direction. As soon as he realized it had passed, he pursued the vehicle.”

At some point, Foxx said, a firearm was tossed from the Jeep into a ditch. Police later recovered a 9mm handgun. A loaded magazine for the handgun was also discovered in the Jeep, Foxx said, which was occupied only by the driver.
