Lehigh man dead following officer-involved shooting, KBI says
A 50-year-old Lehigh man was shot dead Tuesday after he failed to follow officer orders to drop a gun he was holding, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
In a news release, the bureau said Robb Stewart was pronounced dead shortly after appearing from an outbuilding on the property where he lived in the 400 block of East Maria in Lehigh.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about a domestic argument and a man with access to firearms just after 6 p.m. on Tuesday, the release said.
After receiving the call, deputies, along with officers from the Marion and Hillsboro police departments, responded to the property, where they observed a man later identified as Stewart move from a house to a large outbuilding.
After about 15 minutes, Stewart emerged from the outbuilding with a gun, but ignored orders to drop the firearm, the release said. An officer at the scene then fired shots, the release said.
The KBI was contacted by Marion County Sheriff’s Office officials just before 7 p.m.
No law enforcement officers were injured, but one officer was transported to a local hospital as a precautionary measure, the release said. The officer has since been released.
The KBI is investigating the incident, the release said. Lehigh is a town of about 175 residents about 17 miles west of Marion.
