Men on scooter, bicycle jailed in theft of church’s $1,000 kitchen rack

An unusual scene spotted by a sheriff’s deputy led to the recovery a kitchen rack stolen from a local church last week.

Sheriff’s Lt. Lin Dehning said that as the deputy was driving by the 200 block of South Millwood around noon on March 13, he noticed a man on a motorized scooter and a man on a bicycle dragging the stainless steel, commercial-grade rack down the street.

“It was strange enough for the deputy to say to himself, ‘Yeah. This needs looking into,’” Dehning said.

The rack, valued at about $1,000, came from the back of a church located a block away, near Seneca and Douglas. The Sheriff’s Office contacted church officials, who said the piece of kitchen equipment had been stolen.

The men, both in their 50s, were arrested and jailed on suspicion of theft, Dehning said.

He said the men allegedly planned to sell the rack for scrap.
