KBI releases details of fatal officer-involved shooting in Barton County
New details have been released about the officer-involved shooting of a 71-year-old Barton County man Saturday night.
At about 6:40 p.m. Saturday, a Barton County sheriff’s deputy and a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper responded to a report of a domestic disturbance involving an armed man who had fired a gun in rural Barton County, according to a Kansas Bureau of Investigation statement.
Upon arrival, the officers were approached by a man identified as George Carson, who was holding a handgun. The officers instructed Carson to put the gun down, but he instead pointed the gun at the officers and fired a shot. The officers returned fire and Carson was hit.
He was placed into custody and then treated by medical personnel who were at the scene. Carson was taken to Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington, where he died of his wounds.
The KBI was asked to handle the investigation of the shooting and sent agents and a Crime Scene Response team to the location. The KHP trooper and Barton County sheriff’s deputy have been placed on administrative leave, as is standard practice when officer-involved shootings occur.
The results of the investigation will be turned over to the Barton County Attorney for review.
