Why you should be sure to buckle up next week

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office will increase its traffic enforcement efforts the week of Thanksgiving.

More deputies than usual will be on the roads Monday through Nov. 27 “to aggressively enforce the laws,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release. Special attention will be paid to stopping vehicles with drivers who seem impaired and people who aren’t wearing seat belts.

The extra enforcement is paid for with a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation. The sheriff’s office is among area law enforcement agencies that will have extra patrols over the holiday.

Kansas law requires everyone in passenger vehicles carrying fewer than 10 people to be buckled in, sheriff’s Lt. Lin Dehning said. Children under 4 must be in a federally-approved child safety seat, those 4 to 7 years old must be in a booster seat, and children 8 and older must wear a seat belt.
