Appeals court to hear cases in Great Bend and Ottawa this week
The Kansas Court of Appeals will take up cases Tuesday and Wednesday in Ottawa and Great Bend.
Oral arguments start at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday in both cities and at 9 a.m. Wednesday in Great Bend. The public is invited and will have a chance to question the judges after each session.
Judges Melissa Standridge, Karen Arnold-Burger and David Burns will be at the Franklin County Courthouse, 315 S. Main in Ottawa.
Judges Anthony Powell, G. Joseph Pierron and Stephen Hill be at the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend.
This week’s dockets include appeals in criminal cases, family law and worker’s compensation matters and civil disputes, according to a news release from the Kansas Office of Judicial Administration. The judges also will take up more than a two dozen cases that won’t have attorneys arguing in front of the panels, the office said.
Usually the court hears cases in Wichita, Topeka and Kansas City. But “on occasion, we visit other parts of the state ... so our court is accessible to the people of Kansas,” Powell said in a news release.
The court is expected to release written rulings in the cases in about 60 days.
