Boy tells police he was shot in leg while playing basketball

Wichita police are investigating a shooting that happened in Linwood Park in south Wichita shortly before 8 p.m. on Tuesday night.

Shortly after 8 p.m., police officers were called Via Christi Hospital St. Joseph after a 14-year-old boy walked into the hospital with a gunshot wound to his left leg, according to Sgt. Nikki Woodrow, spokeswoman with the Wichita Police Department. The boy told officers he had been playing basketball in the park in the 1900 block of South Kansas when a fight broke out and shots were fired.

The boy told police he was struck by gunfire one time while he attempted to run away.

Woodrow said officers responded to the area and checked the park but were unable to locate a crime scene. People in the park who police talked with did not indicate they heard a disturbance or shots of any kind, Woodrow said.

“The investigation continues and we are asking anybody in the area to give us a call so we can put the pieces together,” Woodrow said.

People are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111 or the Wichita police detective unit at 316-268-4407.
