A 2-year-old boy is in critical condition and his mother’s boyfriend is in jail after the toddler was taken to a local hospital complaining of stomach issues, police said.

The boy was brought to Galichia Hospital at about 7 p.m. Friday by his grandmother, Lt. James Espinoza said. Upon examining the boy, doctors determined he had “several internal injuries,” Espinoza said.

The child was transferred to Wesley Medical Center in critical condition. Police launched an investigation, talking to relatives of the boy.

The suspect in the case, Adrian C. Gordon, was arrested shortly before 2:15 a.m. Saturday following questioning, police records show. Gordon, 22, was booked into jail on suspicion of child abuse, aggravated battery and criminal threat. He is being held on $150,000 bond.

The child had internal injuries to his pancreas and abdomen, as well as burn marks and multiple injuries to his skin, according to a police report. The boy also had broken ribs from a previous injury.

The case remains under investigation, Espinoza said. Two other children in the home on 13th between Grove and Washington have been placed in protective custody.

Gordon has a history of violent crime, Kansas Department of Corrections records show. As a juvenile, he was convicted in 2009 of assault and aggravated assault. After his sentence ended, he was later arrested and convicted for being a felon in possession of a firearm. In both cases, he was sentenced to probation.
