Second defendant sentenced in 2009 killing after bachelor party

Jeremy Trout received more than 11 years in prison for his involvement in a fight that ended in the death of man following a bachelor party.

Trout, 22, admitted that he'd been involved in an argument in May 2009 that ended in one of his friends shooting Vincent Barnes, 33.

Sedgwick County District Judge Warren Wilbert followed the plea agreement this afternoon in issuing 138 months to Trout, who pleaded guilty a year ago to second-degree reckless murder.

Trout, who testified last month in the trial of Mike Reed, will probably receive the least amount of prison time. Witnesses said he also had a less significant role in Barnes' killing.

Robert Reed, who admitted firing the gun that killed Barnes, is serving a 19-year sentence after pleading guilty to second-degree unintentional murder. Mike Reed is facing life in prison after a jury convicted him of first-degree felony murder.

According to witnesses in the case:

Robert Reed was supposed to be married the next day. He, his older brother Mike and Trout went out drinking to celebrate. During the night, Mike Reed wanted to buy cocaine and called Barnes, who did not have cocaine and was trying to get off drugs, his family said. Barnes hung up on Mike Reed. The two brothers became upset and went over to confront Barnes at his apartment, where he suffered a shot to the abdomen during a scuffle with the three men. He later died from his wounds.

Trout had admitted he was involved in the argument and fight leading up to the shooting.
