Countywide seat belt patrol set for next week

File photo

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office will run a seat belt saturation patrol throughout the county Monday afternoon.

The patrol is an effort to decrease the number of unrestrained drivers and passengers in vehicles, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. Five deputies on motorcycles will be stopping those not wearing seat belts.

The sheriff’s office was not specific about when and where they would be on patrol.

In Kansas, everyone in a passenger vehicle designed to carry fewer than 10 people must wear a seat belt, or risk fines.

Children younger than 4 must be in a federally-approved child safety seat. Children from 4 to 8 years old must be in a child safety seat or booster seat unless he or she weighs more than 80 pounds or is taller than 4-foot-9.

For more information about the seat belt and child restraint laws, see this Kansas Department of Transportation brochure.
