Getting to know: Jennifer Brown
JENNIFER BROWN
Financial therapist, Integrative Counseling Center
Money problems are usually about more than money, Brown said.
Her job is to help clients deal with emotions, relationships and other factors that affect spending, along with cultivating money-management skills.
“There’s really a lack of this type of (service) available in our community,” she said.
“Most people, when they’re having trouble, go to a financial adviser, but advisers aren’t really equipped to deal with the emotional side that comes along with all the money issues, and a lot of therapist don’t have the financial literacy to help their clients set up a budget or talk to them about it.”
Brown, 30, grew up in Wichita and earned a degree in personal financial planning from Kansas State University. After working in banking, she earned a degree in marriage and family planning from Newman University and is now licensed through the state as a therapist.
“My practice is to combine those two fields and bring them together,” she sad.
She joined the practice at Integrative Counseling Center, 4425 W. Zoo Blvd., in June and is one of the few financial therapists in the city.
Brown and her husband, Kendall, have been married for six years. She enjoys the fiber arts, including knitting and spinning her own yarn.
“That’s kind of my self-care.”
