After a successful clinic last month, Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters will continue its juvenile record expungement program through August.

From 9 a.m. to noon every Monday in August, anyone with a juvenile record can go to the Big Brothers Big Sisters office, 310 E. Second St., and apply to get that record removed. The expungement service is part of the organization’s “Face Forward” program for youth.

A clean juvenile record can mean better access to employment and schooling, said Brittany Waldman, recruiter and events coordinator for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

“Many of them, because they have that juvenile background, are disadvantaged in getting a job and getting an education, in all of those areas,” Waldman said.

The service is free, and applicants must be 16 to 24 years old. The program is only for expunging juvenile records, Waldman said, not adult convictions.

In addition to expungement, Waldman said the Face Forward program offers “wrap-around” programs for applicants with employment, education and mental health services.

If someone has a criminal record, and they’re not sure whether it can be expunged, Waldman said the best thing to do is talk to someone at the office.

“If we can’t serve you, we can direct you to someone who can help you,” she said.
