Man shot in parking lot outside Dillons at 13th and West

Police are investigating after a man was shot in the Dillons parking lot at 13th and West Street late Thursday afternoon.

Wichita police Lt. Drew Seiler said officers responded to the call around 5:20 p.m. and located a young male victim near a bus stop.

He had a single gunshot wound, Seiler said, and was transported to a local hospital.

A young male suspect carrying a firearm was observed fleeing the scene, Seiler said. A small, white four-door sedan was also seen leaving the scene.

Police do not know whether the suspect and the victim knew each other, or the circumstances leading up to the shooting.

Dan Touchatt, 36, was across 13th Street in the Genesis Health Club parking lot when he heard what sounded like two gunshots, he said. He called police to report it.

Then when he had determined there was no immediate threat to him, he said he “jumped in (his) car, thought (he’d) cruise over see what was going on.”

“I saw the suspect sprinting across the parking lot heading east, and then he jumped over the concrete wall over towards the credit union,” he said. “I got back on the phone immediately, because I knew I needed to get that information to whoever was actually going to go looking for him, because it sure wasn’t going to be me.”

Touchatt, a former local TV cameraman, went to where the victim was near the bus stop, and saw him suffering from what looked like a gunshot wound to his right buttocks, he said.

“We had him lie down, and another gentleman that was there took off his shirt and had him hold pressure on his rear end until the officers and the ambulance got on scene,” Touchatt said.

The man’s wound is not considered life-threatening, according to police.
