A 4-year-old boy remains in critical but stable condition Monday after darting into a residential street and being hit by a car a day earlier, police said.

The boy “ran out from behind a car” and was struck by a southbound Honda Civic driven by a 29-year-old woman at about 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the 1300 block of South Terrace, Wichita police Sgt. Nikki Woodrow said. His injuries include head trauma and he underwent surgery after being transported to a hospital.

“We do not believe speed was a factor” in the collision, Woodrow said.

The boy, who ran out into the street from a yard, is in stable condition. The investigation into the incident continues, Woodrow said.
