Detective experiences ill effects after opening bag of unknown drug
Sedgwick County sheriff’s officials are working to identify an unknown drug that caused a detective to suffer ill effects within 30 seconds of coming into contact with it on Tuesday.
According to a news release from the department, a sheriff’s detective was field-testing a disposable baggie filled with the substance on Tuesday.
He was “overwhelmed by a strong smell and within 30 seconds he started sweating, his pupils dilated, his speech slurred and he became light-headed,” according to the release.
He was taken to a hospital but has since been released and returned to full duty.
The release hinted the substance may have been fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that is 50 times more potent than heroin, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
