Run for them, not from them: Officers Down 5K comes to Wichita

A community event to celebrate police officers and to honor fallen law enforcement heroes will be held in Wichita for the first time on July 16, according to a news release.

The Officers Down 5K Run/Walk and Community Day will include a 5K run/walk, 1 mile walk, kids fun run and Community Day. The Wichita Police Department will participate in the Community Day events, according to Sgt. Nikki Woodrow. Those events will include lunch, live music, family activities and more.

The event will be held in Sedgwick County Park, 6501 W. 21st St. North. Registration and check-in will be 7 to 7:45 a.m. The 5K and 1 mile walk will be 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The kids fun run and Community Day will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The 5K costs $45, the walk costs $25, and the kids run costs $20. All three include Community Day events. Registration ends July 11.

The Officers Down 5K organization “celebrates officers who put their lives on the line daily to keep our communities safe and honors those who have fallen in the line of duty,” according to its website.

The event will benefit the Four Legged Project and the Fraternal Order of Police, Wichita, Lodge No. 5, which designated the Honore Adversis Foundation as its beneficiary. The foundation provides financial assistance or services to officers for line-of-duty deaths, serious injuries, medical conditions and personal hardships.

The Four Legged Project provides ballistic vests to police dogs.
