Bicyclist critical, dog killed, after collision with pickup in Derby
Derby police are investigating after a pickup truck struck a bicyclist near Rock Road and 95th Street early Friday, severely injuring the bicyclist and killing one of two dogs he had with him.
Derby Police Chief Robert Lee said the 36-year-old bicyclist was traveling north on Rock from 95th, which is south of town. His bike was pulling a carrier with two Labrador retrievers inside.
Around 9:15 a.m., a pickup driven by a 79-year-old man struck the bicyclist, Lee said, causing “extremely critical injuries” to the bicyclist.
The bicyclist was taken to a local hospital, where he remained Friday evening.
One of the two Labrador retrievers was killed on impact, Lee said. The other is with a local veterinarian being treated for its injuries.
Police have talked with the driver of the pickup but have not made an arrest in the case, Lee said.
The department will continue to investigate the case and present it to the district attorney’s office, which will decide if charges will be filed.
The department wants to talk with any potential witnesses. If you saw the crash this morning, call police at 316-788-1557 or 911, Lee said.
