Wichita organizations, congregations hold diaper drive

Christian Women in Action, First United Methodist Church and United Way of the Plains have partnered for the citywide Changing Wichita Diaper Drive to collect diapers for families in need, according to Duane Butler, United Way spokesman.

The organizations are challenging Wichita-area congregations to participate by hosting their own drives, said Margarita LaFarelle Hunt, chairwoman of Christian Women in Action.

The drive began May 1 and will end June 30. Churches will hold individual drives and collect diapers throughout May and June, and then the diapers will be stored in the United Way’s warehouse, LaFarelle Hunt said.

The diapers will be donated to more than 20 nonprofit organizations through United Way’s Give Items of Value Program. The organizations will then distribute the diapers to families in need.

Diaper sizes from newborn to 5 years old are needed. Diapers can be donated at participating churches or at First United Methodist Church, 330 N. Broadway.

Churches interested in participating can contact Mark Stump at mstump@unitedwayplains.org. For more information, contact LaFarelle Hunt at margaritalh33@yahoo.com or Stump.

Families in need of diapers can contact the United Way by dialing 211.
