Mystery writer Louise Penny to visit Wichita in August

Louise Penny, author of the best-selling Inspector Gamache series of mystery novels, will visit Wichita in August, a local bookseller announced Monday.

Watermark Books & Cafe is bringing Penny, who will speak at 6 p.m. on Aug. 31 at Abode Venue, 1330 E. Douglas.

Penny’s 12th Gamache novel, “A Great Reckoning,” will be published Aug. 30, and Wichita is one of the first stops on her book tour.

“I’m just so excited,” said Watermark owner Sarah Bagby, who heard Penny speak at BookExpo America in Chicago last week.

“I can’t even think of enough good adjectives to describe her,” Bagby said. “She was classy and gracious. … The way she wove the story of what drove her to be a writer and what it does for her life, in terms of just survival, was really great.”

Penny is a bestselling author and five-time winner of the Agatha Award for best mystery novel of the year. She lives in a small village south of Montreal.

Tickets to the reading and signing are $33 and include a copy of “A Great Reckoning.” Another ticket option is $38 and includes the book and a ticket for one companion to attend with you.
