Wichita police joining the Running Man Challenge

Wichita police officers are joining the Running Man Challenge that is sweeping the globe, but the department is putting its own twist on the internet phenomenon.

Echoing the Ice Bucket Challenge pattern of shooting a video and challenging others to take the challenge, law enforcement agencies are posting videos of their officers dancing to the Ghost Town DJ’s 1996 hit “My Boo.”

The “running man” is a hip-hop dance that many agencies are incorporating with the song.

Rather than challenge other departments, “we’re challenging each other,” Sgt. Nikki Woodrow said.

Competing teams are submitting videos that will be posted to the Wichita Police Department’s Facebook page on Monday morning. The video that gets the most likes on Facebook will be declared the winner, Woodrow said.

Voting will run through 5 p.m. on Thursday, with the winner announced on Friday.

This is National Police Week, and the Running Man Challenge is a way to build camaraderie and “have some fun,” Woodrow said.

“It’s something kind of lighthearted that officers can get involved with,” she said.
