Police identify body found in Pawnee Prairie Park

The 21-year-old man whose body was found in Pawnee Prairie Park on Saturday morning died of an apparent drug overdose, police said Tuesday.

Kaleb Bonilla of Wichita was using drugs in a car with friends parked near the park Friday night, Lt. James Espinoza said.

“He asked to get out of vehicle and ran toward the direction of park,” Espinoza said.

A woman walking in the park the next morning spotted Bonilla’s body lying on ice covering a creek in the park and called 911. His body was removed from the creek and he was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators are awaiting toxicology reports to find out what Bonilla was using in the car before his death, Espinoza said.

“They were using something other than marijuana,” he said.

The group of people with Bonilla in the car left the area after he ran toward the park.
