Group to protest Brownback and support refugees

A local organization called People of Faith for Peace will host a demonstration in Old Town on Friday to show support for resettling refugees in Kansas.

The demonstrators condemn that Gov. Sam Brownback rejected federal funds for the Kansas Refugee Resettlement Program State Plan.

The demonstration will take place at the Old Town Plaza, 353 N. Mead, from 5 to 6 p.m. on Friday. Organizers will distribute flyers listing refugee and homeless relief organizations and will hold signs that welcome refugees.

They’ve created an online petition against Brownback’s decision, found at petitions.moveon.org/sign/brownback-your-fear-of/. The site garnered 688 signatures toward its 750-signature goal as of Thursday morning.

The group also will also host a program called Building Bridges Art Exhibit and Sale from August through October with 80 paintings by artists resettled as refugees from Iraq displayed at different locations around Wichita and Newton.
