4.2 earthquake rattles Wichita area late Monday night

An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 was recorded Monday night near Crescent, Okla., according to the U.S. Geological Survey website.

The quake, which was felt in the Wichita area, struck at 11:53 p.m. and was centered about 3.1 miles north-northeast of Crescent. It had a depth of about 3 miles.

The USGS is asking anyone who felt it to share details on its website. Residents in Derby, Arkansas City, Clearwater and Cheney reported feeling the earthquake.

Earlier Monday night, a magnitude-2.9 earthquake struck near Enid, Okla. That quake was centered 8.7 miles east-northeast of Enid, according to the USGS, and had a depth of 1.6 miles. It struck at 10:35 p.m.

According to a report released Monday by the USGS, northern Oklahoma and southern Kansas have experienced just short of 6,000 earthquakes of magnitude 2.7 or more in the past two years.

Maps attached to the report show the risk of a damaging quake in the area is estimated as high as 10 to 17 percent in the next year.
