Texas man killed in Kansas Turnpike crash involving horses near Andover exit
A 31-year-old Texas man was killed in a crash on the Kansas Turnpike early Friday morning, authorities said.
The accident was one of two just after 2 a.m. in which vehicles struck horses loose on the turnpike just north of the Andover exit, said Rachel Bell, a spokeswoman for the Kansas Turnpike Authority. All three horses were killed in the crashes.
Charles Schoenhair of College Station, Texas, was driving north on the turnpike just after 2 a.m. when his 2007 Toyota Rav 4 struck horses that were on the roadway, according to a Kansas Turnpike Authority report.
Schoenhair died at the scene. Northbound lanes were blocked for several hours after the crash.
A 25-year-old woman from College Station was injured in the crash and taken to Wesley Medical Center. She was no longer a patient shortly after 6 a.m.
A 39-year-old Oklahoma City man was injured when his Ford Fiesta struck a horse in the northbound lanes just a minute after the first crash, according to the Turnpike Authority. He was taken to Wesley for treatment and then released.
The horses came from property next to the turnpike, Bell said. When asked how the horses got onto the highway, Bell said, “We’re still working on that.”
