Driver dies after crash at Kansas International Dragway
A Texas man has died following a crash Sunday afternoon at the Kansas International Dragway, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
A Sedgwick County dispatcher said a call came in at about 1:30 p.m. about a crash at the speedway, which is along 61st Street North in Maize. A man injured in a crash was transported to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis, according to Sharon Hurley of Via Christi.
A 911 supervisor on Monday gave this timeline for the response to the crash at the speedway, which is along 61st Street North in Maize: The first call came in to 911 at 1:35 p.m., and an EMS crew arrived at 1:43 p.m.
The victim, identified on the Kansas International Dragway’s Facebook page on Sunday night as Jason Lumpkin, 34, of Fort Worth, was removed from his car at 1:48. Emergency workers left the track for the hospital at 2:07 p.m. and arrived at St. Francis at 2:22 p.m.
Throughout the ambulance’s trip to the hospital, the supervisor said, Lumpkin was either in critical condition or unresponsive. Hurley said Lumpkin died at 4:12 p.m.
Lumpkin participated in a racing event Sunday at the speedway, according to the dispatcher. The site was host to an event called “Import Face-off,” according to the Kansas International Dragway’s website.
Logan Majors of Wichita, who said he witnessed the crash, said a car on the dragway driven by Lumpkin went out of control and hit a wall after crossing the finish line. Majors said the car, a white Honda, went about 15 feet into the air and flipped several times.
“It’s something you only see online,” Majors said Sunday night. “I’ve been to quite a few races out there, and I’ve never seen anything like it.”
