Authorities are investigating a possible case of child abuse in south Wichita.

A 4-month-old girl was brought to Wesley Medical Center on Tuesday by her parents who wanted her checked out, Wichita police Capt. Jeff Weible said. The child was diagnosed with a skull fracture and bleeding on the brain.

Police were called and the Exploited and Missing Child Unit launched an investigation. The parents had been told the girl fell while in the care of a babysitter Sunday in the 2100 block of South Minneapolis, Weible said.

According to the parents, the child behaved normally until Tuesday, when “they noticed something strange,” Weible said.

He did not specify what caught their attention.

“At this time, we do not believe the parents are suspects in any abuse,” Weible said.

The child is in stable condition in the intensive care unit at Wesley, he said.
